Whey protein is a natural byproduct from enzyme and acid produced cheese making. Whey protein is a component of all mammalian milk. The percentage of protein in cow’s milk is 3.75%. The total protein content is made up of 80% casein protein and 20% whey protein. During the cheese making process coagulation of the casein protein begins, this is the curd, and what’s left is a liquid stream of whey. Most athletes and bodybuilders consider whey protein powder to be the best protein supplement on the market. This is a natural product that comes from milk. When cheese is made, whey protein is separated out and can then be used in a variety of products. Protein can be found naturally in many different foods such as beef, fish, chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, soy and certain vegetables. None of these foods, however, contain the high amount of condensed protein that is found in whey. These foods aren’t always good to eat in quantities large enough to get enough protein per serving either.

The only question that remains is how much of a daily intake is recommended. This naturally will differ depending on the person’s weight and size. In general however, an athlete will take roughly 25 grams a day. A bodybuilder on the other hand, will need more, and will often take up to 150 grams per day. It is not, however, recommended that one take doses that are too high as this is not good for their liver.
